If you are among the many Americans that enjoy a good variety of pasta, you will not want to miss out on this event at the Royalton Bible Church, 8457 Bunker Hill Road in Gasport. Pasta is good enough to stand on it’s own, so if that were all we were going to have, we would go home with a full belly, a warmed up heart, and good fellowship.
Everyone is invited to attend the Pasta and Chocolate Luncheon on February 12, 2012
But, that is not all, there is CHOCOLATE, now who could pass up a night of pasta topped off with a desert like chocolate? That is especially true with Valentine’s Day so close!
The fellowship will be good, the food will be good, the only thing missing from a fantastic night, is you.
Plan now to attend this evening of fun, food and lots more at Royalton Bible Church. To reserve a place, please call, (716) 433-8030.

Sam Adams Black Lager is now available at Darrell’s Place. It’s a dark beer that is brewed with several different roasts of malt to create a smooth body and a depth of malt character that has to be tasted to be believed. Come on in and try it and become a believer yourself. But just what is Black Lager and what is this thing you call “schwarbier”? Let Darrell help with this finer point about dark beer! (Actually, we took this off the Sam Adams website but Darrell knows this too.)
When one sees a beer with a darker complexion these days, more often than not it’s a porter or a stout. But looks can be deceiving. There exists a style older than both and generally less well known; the schwarzbier, which literally translates to “Black Beer.” Unlike its dark cousins which are ales hailing from Britain, schwarzbier comes from Germany and uses a bottom fermenting lager yeast. Samuel Adams Black Lager is brewed in the tradition of the latter. A medium bodied beer brewed using several different roasts of malt to create a smooth body and depth of malt character that has to be tasted to be believed.

The amazing and fabulous hand knitted works of art some of us may refer to as “toys” are now a part of Artists in Buffalo. Yes, there were recently discovered, just like a Hollywood star discovery, while on a show in Buffalo and now, well, who knows what lies ahead.
About Artists in Buffalo
So what about this group that realizes the artistic talent that Woodman Farms puts into every creation? Well, the mission of the association is to:
Support, promote and increase the visibility of regional artists, galleries, museums and related arts businessesProvide a substantial visual resource that conveys the quality and breadth of art created in our area
Provide a unique opportunity for the greater community to visit artists in their working environment
Support Buffalo Niagara region in its quest to be identified as a strong cultural center and its emergence as an arts destination
This association has made amazing strides since its inception in the Fall 2001, showcasing the cultural and artistic treasures in the city and region.
So you can see the Woodman Farms Gallery online on Artists In Buffalo and look at some of the other beautiful creations from other area artisans too.
NOTE: While this is a beautiful thing, I just want everyone to know that I knew the handmade, hand knitted items from Woodman Farms were art – yes, I did. So, I am very pleased that Artists in Buffalo agrees with me.

Guiding Principles
John and Gary Butcher formed Summit Graphics as a small business in 1984. The original focus was to be a small press printer producing such items as letterhead envelopes, and business cards.
In 1992, Summit Graphics moved to a commercial plaza at 5714 S.Transit Road. From 1992 to the present, John and Gary have turned Summit Graphics into a state-of-the-art print shop with the following capibilities; 1-4 color offset printing, digital black and white and color printing, graphic design, and lettershop services.
Summit Graphics started out the new millennium by winning three gold awards, two Silver awards, and Best of Show at the Buffalo Club of Printing House Craftsmen’s Superb Printing Contest. In March of 2000, the Eastern Niagara County Chamber of Commerce selected Summit Graphics as Small Business of the Year.
In late 2000, Summit Graphics changed its name to Summit Print & Mail LLC: A new name to reflected a new focus.
The name Summit Print Mail, LLC lets the customer know what Summit is all about – printing that moves through the mail.

That’s what the told me when I mentioned that Maedl’s Woodcrafts makes kitchen cabinets. While they do, and their customers brag that they have a Maedl Kitchen, apparently there are people who brag about their Maedl’s den, office or bathroom cabinets too.
And then they added that Maedl’s Woodcrafts also is known for their custom counter tops, not just cabinets, so I was a bit more than red faced.
It seems that many people, instead of moving to a new home, are updating their homes more now that the economy is a bit tighter. They aren’t only redoing kitchens, they are updating bathrooms, dens and office spaces too.
Of course, the cabinets and counter tops are focal points in each of these spaces, and here is where Maedl’s can help the most by custom fitting cabinets to your space. Store bought cabinets out of a chain store come in specific sizes and you install them where they fit.
Get the most from your dollar too, because the prices for Maedl’s and the box stores cabinets are NOT that different. Call (716) 735-7631 to schedule a visit with Maedl’s Woodcrafts.

Question: Does Acupuncture Hurt? What if I am afraid of needles?
Acupuncture is a safe and relatively painless treatment when performed by a qualified and conscientious practitioner. Licensed acupuncturists know the human anatomy well and are trained to insert needles safely.
Acupuncture needles are sterilized and disposable after a single use. An acupuncture needle is not the same as a medical hypodermic needle, they are many time thinner.
With needle insertion you may experience a brief discomfort as the needle penetrates the skin that can be followed by a mild sensation of tingling, warmth, or heaviness, that usually disappears.
Most people find the experience extremely relaxing and uplifting and even fall asleep for the duration of the treatment.
The benefits of acupuncture, an ancient and effective Chinese method for treating a wide variety of health conditions, is getting more recognition by members of the medical community all over the world, and many people are getting relief with acupuncture treatment.
For more about what acupuncture can do, visit PointsAcupuncture.com or call Stacey Austin at (716) 778-8627.

Congrats to Lisa Trippensee of Apple Blossom Florist who was recognized on September 23, 2011 with a Community Service Award by the Orleans County Orleans County Chamber of Commerce.
But that is not all – both New York State Senator George Maziarz and New York State Assemblyman Steven Hawley joined in with a certificate of merit and a citation from New York State, respectively, to make her service to the local community even more prominently recognized.
Senator Maziarz’s Certificate of Merit included his statement that he is proud to salute Lisa’s accomplishments and that he wishes her well in the future – as do all of us who know her! Lisa has been recognized in the past for her many works to promote the area and local business but this time, she received all THREE awards at once.
Lisa was recognized because of her many and meaningful contributions to the community in both her personal and professional life. The award is an honor and Lisa posed with her shop cat, Blossom, with her citations for this photo at her shop, Apple Blossom Florist, 530 Main Street in Medina.
Apple Blossom Florist is a full service florist and Lisa invites you to come into her shop to visit and enjoy the ever changing displays!

Thank you Andy and Greg for selling hotdogs at the Car Show which made a profit of $50.00!
Discussed: Speed Marketing Event – It was suggested that RHBPA do a combined event with Medina Business Association and have a simple buffet or members could bring hors d’oeuvres and cookies. See attached questionnaire at the end of this post. Please share any other ideas you have at the next meeting.
More on Music in the Park/Wine & Chocolate Event: Wayne Blumrick has all the ticket stubs with people’s names and addresses so announcement cards can be sent out next year. Professional signs should be made to promote the event.
$100 was approved for the Girl Scouts to plant mums in the flower barrels.
April suggested more activities to coincide with the Tree Lighting Ceremony, possibly a sleigh ride with reindeer. Alternative Grounds may have a Christmas Tea. Bring your ideas to the next meeting.
Welcome new member Mark McDaniel, owner of The Candle Nook in Medina!
Joe Mahley is a WNY native, born and raised in Niagara County. He would mostly describe himself as a project manager at CitiBank in Getzville, however recently a hobby of his has taken him in another direction.
Joe did some doodling as a child growing up in Middleport, as most kids do, but by the time he was in high school, sports occupied most of his time.
Joe was also diagnosed with cancer in three areas of his body by the time he was 16. The cancer slowed him down only a little bit, but Joe persevered with his strong faith and positive personality.
By 19, he was cancer free and was able to take some art classes at Niagara County Community College along with his computer courses. It was at NCCC, Joe Mahley truly discovered his talent and his love of art.
Joe drew on and off over the years. He got married, had two beautiful little girls and settled into his career as a programmer. Last year, while on a day off from work, Joe decided to draw some people from an online website called Reddit. He then posted the pictures he drew and made a comment that people should buy them for Valentine’s Day.
Overnight the website that he posted his drawings on received over 170 thousand hits. By the end of the next day, over 250 thousand people had looked at his drawings. People from all over the world started ordering photos. Joe immediately opened East Avenue Art, an online art company.
This past week Joe entered his first art show in Lancaster, NY. He brought some ballerinas he had drawn, hoping to sell some prints. Joe was quite surprised when he won the ribbon for “First Place Expert” and a cash prize at his first show ever. The award he won was the highest honor that the show gave out. Joe continues to work from his Lockport studio taking commissions for portraits, pets, and homes. He has a website, www.EastAveArt.com and facebook page under “East Avenue Art.”
The word about Maedl’s Woodcrafts has traveled to Rochester!
Around the showroom
Richard Maedl installed a beautiful kitchen in the Rochester, NY area and the neighbors are all talking about how great it looks.
His latest kitchen included a unique rope knot edging design on the counter top that really makes this kitchen stand out.
The proud owners of this new Maedl kitchen were not only happy with the beautiful craftsmanship, their custom made kitchen was less expensive than the two other estimates they had gotten from chain home improvement stores.

The January 2011 issue of Faces & Places, a publication of the Medina J0urnal Register, features Lisa Trippensee of Apple Blossom Florist and Blossom, her shop cat.
Blossom just showed up one day and decided to stick around for the long-haul. She has become a fixture at Apple Blossom Florist, 530 Main Street in Medina, and many of the customers stop in just to pet her and say hello. Others walk past and stop for a moment to watch her sun herself in Apple Blossom Forist’s window. Of course, they might also be looking at some of the amazing floral arrangements in the window too.
Become one of Blossom’s Facebook friends by going to this page and clicking her “add friend” link.
You too can stop by and visit her and see what Lisa, Blossom’s mom, at the shop on Main Street in Medina has in the shop. Great gift ideas, chocolate from Barker Chocolate Box, and silk arrangements too. And if you need fresh flowers for any occasion, Apple Blossom Florist has it.
Why do we use the particular cleaning method that we do? Because it’s the one that is recommended by most carpet manufacturers. Our truck mounted hot water extraction system, or steam cleaning, is the best and safest way to clean your carpets and upholstery.

Treasurer’s Report: Balance as of July 9th: $3,038.06
Discussed:
• Music in the Park/Wine Tasting Event had mostly great feedback by attendees. A few changes will be made on the tickets for next year to allow people to check a box if they want their ticket to go into the drawing for the balloon ride. A separate raffle for the balloon ride was suggested, also the idea to have tethered rides available which could possibly get us a better price. Directional signs are needed for the Restrooms as well as 30 promotional signs. It was decided that the tables and chairs should be rented along with the tent to reduce clean up work.
• Next year there will be committees formed to handle organizing, advertising and promotion, set up and break down to more evenly distribute the work load.
• A huge thank you to all who worked so hard to make this first time event so successful!
• Thank you Andy Twarowski and FMC for providing the Hot Air Balloon Ride for the event!
Upcoming Events
• Saturday, Sept. 3rd Labor Day Festivities (see attached flyer). Members can set up at a vendor table, must register by August 31st. Call or email Julie Maedl at 735-7631, jamaedl@yahoo.com
• Sunday, Sept. 11th – The Middleport Car Show Noon – 3:00. There will be a trivia contest.
• Andy Twarowski will bring a grill for the hotdog stand. Anyone who would like to help, please contact Julie. The stand should be set up by 11a.m.

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is a vital part of Western New York’s cultural and historic community. The museum’s collection is filled with rare
and valuable artifacts that tell the story of an important local industry with
national significance. More importantly though, the museum is a treasure for visitors and residents alike, a place where they can come to not only learn about the past but build memories for the future.
Each year thousands of adults and school children come to tour the museum, take part in special events, and of course share a magical ride on the historic carrousels.
There’s nothing magic keeping the museum’s doors open, though—just the
dedication of many people. The museum relies heavily on the hard work, skill,
and passion of numerous volunteers for most of its operations—from guided tours to building maintenance. This summer we are looking for more such people to help fulfill our vital educational mission. Whatever your strengths and
talents, the museum has a place for you.
We currently need help in a number of areas, including admissions, the gift shop, operating the carrousels, construction and maintenance, tour guides, the children’s gallery and special events, and much more.
If you think you have what it takes, join us for an introductory open house
from 3:00pm – 5:00pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Enjoy a special tour of the
museum and learn more about our fascinating history. Discover all of the
exciting volunteer opportunities available, and how you can help. Become part
of a fun and friendly group of staff and volunteers and discover one of the
most rewarding and FUN volunteer experiences around!
For further information about this or any of the museum’s special events,
programs, or tours, visit our web site: www.carrouselmuseum.org or contact
us at 716-693-1885 or info@carrouselmuseum.org.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference, like the perfect hardware on your new kitchen cabinets. When you buy from the big box stores, they choose that for you and it you want to change it, you buy it yourself and do it yourself, but not at Maedl’s Woodcrafts.
You put your own special and individual finishing touch on it. Our customers are happy that we have a large hardware selection from many different distributors so that their project can have just the right finishing touch.
Maedl’s Woodcrafts has been in business for many years and our customers know that they get the most bang from their buck when they order one cabinet or a complete kitchen from us. We can make your spaces into something both beautiful and practical by designing a unique kitchen plan for your size and shape room. The big box stores can’t do that. Their cabinets some in set sizes – at Maedl’s we set the size to your space.
It’s all about getting quality cabinets made by craftsman for the best price – in fact, it’s often the same price that you would pay for cabinet out of a box. Call us to come visit our showroom and learn more.
There’s more good news about the drive to raise the funds needed to renovate the “North Wing” of the Medina Memorial Hospital’s 30-bed Residential Health Care Facility. A total of $752,926 is needed for the project and we are pleased to note that, with the help of our generous local businesses, organizations and residents, we have already raised a significant portion of that amount – take a look at the thermometer at the left and see what we mean.
This is a community campaign to fund the renovation of the 40-year-old North Wing. While we are getting closer, we need your help.
You can help with your donation of any amount with your online donation or by pledging your donation over a three year period.
Take a look at our success so far and then you too can decide how you can become a part of the progress. Thank you for your donation and support of the effort to renovate the North Wing at Medina Memorial Hospital.

With over two decades of experience, the Blackbird team has the resources, knowledge, and relationships to compete at the highest level in the industry while maintaining the flexibility to deliver at the local level.
Blackbird knows it’s the attention to detail that really matters. It matters if a client needs to sell within 30 days or if they need to hold out for the highest financial return. It matters if the union is hostile or if the auction descriptions give right-fit buyers enough information to bid with confidence. It matters to our clients that they are kept in the information loop from beginning to end. The details matter. For auction sales
Blackbird takes the time to understand what the seller defines as success, and then uses an adaptive approach to customize solutions to get there. All valuations are conducted by a certified appraiser in accordance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Maedl’s Woodcrafts is known for their custom counter tops and cabinets, and now because their business is doing so well, it means great prices for their customers.
It seems that many people, instead of moving to a new home, are updating their homes more now that the economy is a bit tighter. They are updating bathrooms, dens and office spaces and keeping Maedl’s Woodcrafts in Middleport very busy. And using the law of supply and demand, that translates into great prices for the customer, so now is the time to call Maedl’s and talk about your new kitchen or bath upgrade.
Maedl’s can help the most by custom fitting cabinets to your space so you use every bit of available space. Not so for the store bought cabinets out of a chain store that come in specific sizes and you install them where they fit. Don’t waste your space, get a custom fit.
Get the most from your dollar too, because the prices for Maedl’s and the box stores cabinets are NOT that different. Call (716) 735-7631 to schedule a visit with Maedl’s Woodcrafts.
Bok choy has a strong flavor, a cross between kale and cabbage. Baby bok choy, a miniature version, has a much milder taste and can be found in the produce section at Wegmans.
Personally, I prefer shopping at local Asian markets such as Hoowa Supermarket on Sheridan Drive in Amherst, or T and T Market on Elmwood in Kenmore.
Fresh produce arrives at both markets on Thursdays and Fridays. Don’t be afraid to shop at your local Asian markets. It may feel strange at first, but if you frequent the store often enough, they will come to know you and greet you with a smile each time you arrive.
I admit, it’s sometimes difficult to shop at Asian markets due to the language barrier, but there is always at least one person who speaks English and can help you. When in doubt, buy the item, bring it home and google it. I’ve found many lovely treasures this way, and the cost of items in the Asian markets is not prohibitive, so if something turns out not so great, you won’t have wasted too much money.
This Thursday, step out to a local Asian market and pick up some delicious baby bok choy and whip up this delicious side dish. No cashews or too expensive? Substitute roasted peanuts or almonds for the cashews.
Baby bok choy with cashews
Ingredients:
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 cup green onions, roughly choppped, including green ends (about 4 green onions)
3 cloves garlic, minced (use one clove if want a lighter garlic flavor)
1 pound baby bok choy, rinsed, larger leaves separated from base, base trimmed but still present, holding the smaller leaves together
1/2 tsp. dark sesame oil
1/2 cup roasted, salted cashews, roughly chopped
Directions:
Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan on medium high heat. Add onions, then garlic, then bok choy. Sprinkle with sesame oil and salt.
Cover, and let the baby bok choy cook down for approximately 3 minutes (like spinach, when cooked, the bok choy will wilt a bit)
Remove cover and reduce the heat to low. Stir and let cook for a minute or two longer, until the bok choy is just cooked.
Gently mix in cashews.
Yield: 4 servings
Rachael’s recipe notes:
If desired, you can reduce the olive oil in this recipe to 1 Tbsp., but you may want to add a bit of water (a tablespoon or two) to the pan when you cover it.
Any sesame oil will do, but dark has the most flavor. If you can’t find it, use whatever sesame oil you can find. Sesame oil can be found in the Asian section at most local markets such as Wegmans, Tops or even Budwey’s. It can also be found at Hoowa Supermarket and T & T Supermarket, and generally is less expensive at these two stores.

Therapies that are included in the scope of practitioners who practice Traditional Chinese Medicine include:
