The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is a vital part of Western New York’s cultural and historic community. The museum’s collection is filled with rare
and valuable artifacts that tell the story of an important local industry with
national significance. More importantly though, the museum is a treasure for visitors and residents alike, a place where they can come to not only learn about the past but build memories for the future.

Each year thousands of adults and school children come to tour the museum, take part in special events, and of course share a magical ride on the historic carrousels.
There’s nothing magic keeping the museum’s doors open, though—just the
dedication of many people. The museum relies heavily on the hard work, skill,
and passion of numerous volunteers for most of its operations—from guided tours to building maintenance. This summer we are looking for more such people to help fulfill our vital educational mission. Whatever your strengths and
talents, the museum has a place for you.
We currently need help in a number of areas, including admissions, the gift shop, operating the carrousels, construction and maintenance, tour guides, the children’s gallery and special events, and much more.
If you think you have what it takes, join us for an introductory open house
from 3:00pm – 5:00pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Enjoy a special tour of the
museum and learn more about our fascinating history. Discover all of the
exciting volunteer opportunities available, and how you can help. Become part
of a fun and friendly group of staff and volunteers and discover one of the
most rewarding and FUN volunteer experiences around!
For further information about this or any of the museum’s special events,
programs, or tours, visit our web site: www.carrouselmuseum.org or contact
us at 716-693-1885 or info@carrouselmuseum.org.

There’s more good news about the drive to raise the funds needed to renovate the “North Wing” of the Medina Memorial Hospital’s 30-bed Residential Health Care Facility. A total of $752,926 is needed for the project and we are pleased to note that, with the help of our generous local businesses, organizations and residents, we have already raised a significant portion of that amount – take a look at the thermometer at the left and see what we mean.
This is a community campaign to fund the renovation of the 40-year-old North Wing. While we are getting closer, we need your help.
You can help with your donation of any amount with your online donation or by pledging your donation over a three year period.
Take a look at our success so far and then you too can decide how you can become a part of the progress. Thank you for your donation and support of the effort to renovate the North Wing at Medina Memorial Hospital.

Auction and appraisal industry veteran, David Fiegel, has launched Blackbird Asset Services. Recognizing the need for more personal and flexible service in the auction and appraisal industry, Blackbird was founded to combine the attention of a boutique firm with the results of a large company.
With over two decades of experience, the Blackbird team has the resources, knowledge, and relationships to compete at the highest level in the industry while maintaining the flexibility to deliver at the local level.
Blackbird knows it’s the attention to detail that really matters. It matters if a client needs to sell within 30 days or if they need to hold out for the highest financial return. It matters if the union is hostile or if the auction descriptions give right-fit buyers enough information to bid with confidence. It matters to our clients that they are kept in the information loop from beginning to end. The details matter. For auction sales
Blackbird takes the time to understand what the seller defines as success, and then uses an adaptive approach to customize solutions to get there. All valuations are conducted by a certified appraiser in accordance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Bok choy has a strong flavor, a cross between kale and cabbage. Baby bok choy, a miniature version, has a much milder taste and can be found in the produce section at Wegmans.
Personally, I prefer shopping at local Asian markets such as Hoowa Supermarket on Sheridan Drive in Amherst, or T and T Market on Elmwood in Kenmore.
Fresh produce arrives at both markets on Thursdays and Fridays. Don’t be afraid to shop at your local Asian markets. It may feel strange at first, but if you frequent the store often enough, they will come to know you and greet you with a smile each time you arrive.
I admit, it’s sometimes difficult to shop at Asian markets due to the language barrier, but there is always at least one person who speaks English and can help you. When in doubt, buy the item, bring it home and google it. I’ve found many lovely treasures this way, and the cost of items in the Asian markets is not prohibitive, so if something turns out not so great, you won’t have wasted too much money.
This Thursday, step out to a local Asian market and pick up some delicious baby bok choy and whip up this delicious side dish. No cashews or too expensive? Substitute roasted peanuts or almonds for the cashews.
Baby bok choy with cashews
Ingredients:
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 cup green onions, roughly choppped, including green ends (about 4 green onions)
3 cloves garlic, minced (use one clove if want a lighter garlic flavor)
1 pound baby bok choy, rinsed, larger leaves separated from base, base trimmed but still present, holding the smaller leaves together
1/2 tsp. dark sesame oil
1/2 cup roasted, salted cashews, roughly chopped
Directions:
- Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan on medium high heat. Add onions, then garlic, then bok choy. Sprinkle with sesame oil and salt.
- Cover, and let the baby bok choy cook down for approximately 3 minutes (like spinach, when cooked, the bok choy will wilt a bit)
- Remove cover and reduce the heat to low. Stir and let cook for a minute or two longer, until the bok choy is just cooked.
- Gently mix in cashews.
Yield: 4 servings
Rachael’s recipe notes:
If desired, you can reduce the olive oil in this recipe to 1 Tbsp., but you may want to add a bit of water (a tablespoon or two) to the pan when you cover it.
Any sesame oil will do, but dark has the most flavor. If you can’t find it, use whatever sesame oil you can find. Sesame oil can be found in the Asian section at most local markets such as Wegmans, Tops or even Budwey’s. It can also be found at Hoowa Supermarket and T & T Supermarket, and generally is less expensive at these two stores.

Discussion: Winterfest 2011
Attendance this year was about 400 including 248 adults which was fewer than last year. Bad weather predictions may have been a factor. The general consensus is that having the event take place in one building is better. This will be possible for next year since the new wing of the school is complete. There was positive feedback about the activities.
Planning for Winterfest 2012 starts in April! It would be great to have more volunteers to help with the planning and organizing stage.
Thank you to Helen Feron and Heather MacDonald and all the vendors and volunteers for the great job they did.
The annual Dinner Mixer was well attended with 26 businesses represented.
Thank you Wendy for the decals.
A warm welcome to new member, Stacey Austin, L.Ac. Of Points Acupuncture. Stacey is a Licensed Acupuncturist & Chinese Herbalist and works at the office of Dr. Danaher in Newfane.
