It’s easy to understand the difference between a spot and a stain. If you’re not sure, read on.
You can find a spot with your eyes closed. What do I mean? A spot is a discoloring material that has attached itself to the outside of a fiber, which can usually be removed using either chemical or mechanical means.
A stain has penetrated into a fiber causing visible discoloration. In other words, a spot is on the outside of the fiber and a stain is on the inside or has become a part of the fiber. Since a stain is a foreign matter on the fiber, you can feel it with your eyes closed. On the other hand, a stain has penetrated into the fiber, therefore, you couldn’t find it with your eyes closed.
There are different kinds of spots. Solvent Soluble spots are generally oily or greasy in nature. Water Soluble spots encompass a range of materials including food spills, waste material and body fluids. Non-Soluble spots may be composed of sand, metal shavings, crushed shells or grit that is best removed by continuous vacuuming.
Any of the previous spots will not become a permanent stain if you address them as soon as possible. The worst thing you can do is to allow a spot to sit on a carpet for any length of time. For assistance, don’t hesitate to call me.

Let’s consider your options for your new counter tops and what material they can be made of. Rick recommends high definition laminates because of their durability, great looks and reasonable pricing. He hears all the time about the folks who spend a lot of cash on real wood, stone or metal counter tops only to be surprised and disappointed when they scratch, knick, or chip.
While previous articles on Niagara Buzz have looked at real wood and natural stone counter tops, let’s discuss metal. You can have a counter top made of thin sheets of metal (stainless steel, copper, etc.) wrapped around a wood core. The look is great, heatproof, doesn’t absorb bacteria, and durable. It’s also expensive at $50 to $200 per square foot installed. And it can get scratched, show fingerprints and smudges and you may need to polish it routinely to maintain its shine.
Rick likes to let his customers see that they can get the same look but with more durability and a lower cost when they don’t get confused by the lure of “real” metal, wood, stone, etc. that they will pay extra for and may have to replace sooner or live with the knicks, chips, scratches that happen in every kitchen. In short, you can get the look you want at a better price that may look better for a longer time.
