Spalding Ace Hardware Lights the Way
Yes, light bulbs are changing and it may not be easy to figure out what you need now with the new types and properties of the latest in light bulbs. But at Spalding Ace Hardware and Standish-Jones, we can help.
Did you know that the nation’s new light bulb rules start taking effect Sunday?
The standards require light bulbs be at least 25% more efficient and carry labels on the front and back of packages to explain their brightness, annual operating costs and expected life span. This applies to all light bulbs made or imported after Jan. 1, but the efficiency standards apply only to traditional 100-watt incandescents. The efficiency rules will begin applying to the old-fashioned 75-watt bulb in January 2013 and 40- and 60-watt bulbs in January 2014.
The incandescent that Thomas Alva Edison invented is notoriously inefficient. It wastes 90% of its energy as heat rather than light, which is why it’s so hot when in use. So when you need to get your bulbs, head over to Spalding Ace Hardware and get the right thing.

Stop in and find what you need quickly at our stores because we know that you would rather be doing something else instead of picking out light bulbs!

In fact, the reviewer said the baked goods and gourmet delights were “do die for”, and we agree!
If you have never had a Sweet Sixteen cupcake, you are missing something important in life. You need to stop in and pick one out, and we suggest the Red Velvet to start with. They are made with real ingredients like real butter, real sugar, flour, etc. and that makes all the difference in the world to your taste buds.
Back to the article by Mike Kurilovitch that appeared on February 5 in the Buffalo News. Below is the complete article but we am here to tell you that at Niagara Buzz, we agree with his review and we knew all this way before Mike!
LOCKPORT — Sweet Sixteen Cafe is a bakery and a cafe. Chic, homey and delicious.
At least that’s what its web-site says. But what about real people, with real appetites? What would they say?
Well, we’re here to tell you that Sweet Sixteen is, as advertised.
We were first put on the trail of Sweet Sixteen during the Charles Rand Penney expedition at the Kenan Center last fall. While vicariously traversing the deep, dark backwaters of some tribal outpost, we detoured slightly and ended up in the snack bar, where we sampled the world’s biggest, wildest cake pops.
Like velvety towers they were, stages of soft, spongy goodness anchored by mortar-like layers of creamy sweet frosting. Sure, they leaned a little, but what good tower doesn’t?
And that stick going halfway up the middle probably didn’t provide sufficient reinforcement . . . but then, it really didn’t have to. The “pop” was short-lived.
The good news is that you won’t have any trouble finding your way to Sweet Sixteen. It’s right on West Main Street, between Chet’s and Grimble’s on the Erie Canal.
You might say Sweet Sixteen is more bakery than cafe, offering a virtual carload of cupcakes and cookies and cakes. They do weddings and parties, even catering and cooking classes. They also do lunch.
Don’t expect page upon page of gourmet offerings on the menu. They prefer sticking to that old business adage of doing only a few things, but doing them well. Hence, you can get sandwiches, soups and specialty salads — or combinations — but that’s about it.
Oh, and quiches. You can also get special dinners for special occasions via special arrangement, but that’s best left between you and the management.
We stopped in the Cafe shortly before the holidays and enjoyed its Christmas-y storefront. Inside, artglass lamp-shades set off the subdued lighting, creating a coffeehouse feel.
We tried to sample as many offerings as possible. We ordered the beautifully presented Berkeley salad ($7), the roast beef wrap ($8, $6 for a half), the turkey sandwich and cup of soup combo ($8.99) and a cup of the gourmet soup ($4.99).
My daughters were pleased to learn that the entrees were served with a minicupcake and wasted little time texting pictures of the cute little creations to jealous friends.
The broccoli and cheddar soup was thick and unusual, more broccoli than cheddar, but nevertheless quite tasty. The tomato-basil that came with Steffany’s combo was delicious, she said, and the toasty, homemade croutons that accompanied it were excellent.
The candied walnuts that were to top the Berkeley salad had apparently skipped town, so the waitress kindly offered to replace them with pecans, which my wife gladly accepted. The salad was a visual, as well as gastronomic delight, with assorted greens topped with roast beef, banana chips and a garlic-Caesar dressing. She couldn’t stop gushing about how tasty and “different” it was.
The first thing we all noticed were the extremely fresh ingredients, from the salad greens to the cold cuts to those croutons. Everything seemed to have that “just-cut” quality to it.
I said Sweet Sixteen didn’t offer pages and pages of gourmet offerings, but that is definitely not to say that what they do offer isn’t 100 percent gourmet.
Like the roast beef sandwich slathered with basil-pesto mustard, French fried onions and sprouts.
Other sandwich selections include roast beef with red pepper cream cheese, fried onions, lettuce and tomato; chicken salad with cranberries and walnuts; tuna salad with capers and almonds; a veggie wrap with hummus, roasted red peppers and seasonal veggies; glazed ham with white cheddar and honey dijon; and a BLT with fried green tomatoes.
There’s also a Tuscan salad with artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes and a balsamic fig dressing, and a Windsor salad with mixed greens, Gorgonzola, crisp apple, dried cranberries and topped with a balsamic reduction.
Sweet Sixteen tops your dining experience with signature drinks like cherry cocoa with whipped cream, or Italian sodas or gourmet coffees. And, of course, there are the baked goods, each seemingly better than the last.
Given that the cooking area is at least as large—and probably larger — than the intimate dining area, it’s little wonder that the folks at Sweet Sixteen keep coming up with such tasty treats with all that room to experiment.

A lot of people ask about the type of wax used in candles. There is a lot of misinformation out there so I would like to share the following questions and answers are taken from the National Candle Association’s website. Hope they help to clarify and then you can relax and enjoy your scented candles from The Candle Nook with peace of mind.
What kinds of waxes are typically used in candles?
The most commonly used candle wax is paraffin. Beeswax, soy wax, palm wax, gels, and synthetic waxes are also frequently used in candles. Different blends of these waxes are popular with many
manufacturers.
Are certain candle waxes better than others?
No. All types of quality candle waxes have been shown to burn cleanly, safely and in the same manner. U.S. candle manufacturers select waxes or blends of waxes based on their suitability for specific types of candles or formulation profiles, as well as their own candle-making preferences.
Is paraffin wax toxic?
No. Paraffin wax – like all candle waxes – is non-toxic. In fact, paraffin is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in food, cosmetics, and medical applications. Food-grade paraffin is commonly used for manufacturing candles.
Are candles made with “natural” ingredients or essential oils safer?
A natural ingredient, as opposed to a manufactured or synthesized ingredient, is not necessarily any safer. In fact, scores
of natural ingredients are known to be extremely toxic to humans in very small amounts.

The month of April was busy and exciting at Amy Hanssen Training Center.
The main event for most of the clients was attending the AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) horse shows in Hamburg, NY.
A beautiful new Show Complex has recently been built, and it is a venue that horse enthusiasts
from all over are enjoying.
All of the horse and rider teams from Amy Hanssen Training Center at 9063 Chestnut Ridge Road, performed excellently, and tons of prizes were won by all. One of the most exciting parts of each weekend was the Hunter Derby Class.
This class was in the evening, and formal attire was worn by all exhibitors. Wine and cheese
events took place after the awards ceremony.
Several of our horses placed in the top ten each weekend. The big excitement however, was that Virginia Beaton and He’s Got The Details, a horse owned by Amy Hanssen , won BOTH weekends.
The same horse was then awarded with the Grand Champion for both weekends combined. The Reserve Champion was awarded to Virginia Beaton and Millers Review, owned by The Fike family.
Beautiful prizes were given to both of these horses. Everyone works so hard to prepare for these shows and it showed at this April event.
We are proud to say that all were fantastic. Once again, the April QH Shows were successful and greatly enjoyed!

The Candle Nook LLC, Main Street in Medina is simply full of little “nooks” that feature candles centered about a certain theme. It is not only a fun place to visit for the wonderful scented candles, the ice cream, antiques and more, but the nooks are so entertaining.
Like this nook that features scents related to beer and wine. Mark, the Candle Man himself, creates these nooks as well as the candles, and uses some very unique items for display. An old refrigerator like grandma used to have is filled with scented candles in flavors that will make you smile and make you want to have one. And then another. And then another.
It’s a perfect little spot to be to get a feeling for the upcoming Wine About Winter event taking place in Medina on Saturday, February 4 from 3 to 7 PM. Tickets always sell out so it’s best to get them early – like now – at www.WineAboutWinter.com or at Ashlee’s Place in Medina.

The devil is in the details, and Rick captured them in this job for a family in Rochester, NY.
This Maedl’s Woodcrafts kitchen was recently completed, and as usual, was a fabulous job.
The homeowners were really happy with their new Maedl kitchen, and since it was a very complicated job, they had praise galore for Rick Maedl because he did a super job of trimming out.
Most people think a custom built and designed kitchen is a lot more expensive than a kitchen from the large chain stores, but it’s not. Rick Maedl advises you to get a price quote before you spend your hard earned cash on your new kitchen. And custom built kitchens can take advantage of more of the space available in your kitchen area. Cabinets out of a box cannot.
Join the growing number of people “in the know” about a custom made kitchen and call Maedl’s Woodcrafts at (716) 735-7631 to arrange for your price quote.

In honor of January’s official birthstone – garnet – Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, invites you to step into our way-back machine and take a magical ride to a balmy Midtown Manhattan in August of 1885, where immigrant laborers are busy digging the New York City subway and sewer systems.
Deep under West 35th Street, near Broadway, one of the laborers unearths a reddish-brown alamandite garnet weighing an incredible 9 pounds, 10 ounces. As heavy as an infant and about seven inches in diameter, this 24-facet behemoth was originally named the Subway Garnet and you can read the best of the story here…

The Banquet Place at the Middleport Fire Department was the perfect spot for a daytime get-together for a group of fun-loving retirees.
There was a load of room as The Banquet Place seats 500+ and the group used the mic for some old-time trivia and announcements while they enjoyed a video presentation and music playing throughout their event.
While there is a full kitchen and catering can be arranged, this party brought in their own food and beverages. Whatever suits you!
The Banquet Place is available for rent for just about any type of event – graduation time isn’t that far off. Call Dave at 628-1361 to book your event or for more information.

Sometimes it’s just nice to host a party away from home.
Why? Because there’s no pre or post-cleaning involved, and at the Banquet Place at the Middleport Fire Hall, everyone gets a good look at the TV because there are 5 of them around the room.
Relax and watch at the bar or find a seat with friends at a table where you can enjoy some typical football fare and still see the action from any one of the TVs placed around the hall. And if you don’t want to run and bring in your food, catering can be arranged.
Interested? Call Dave at (716) 628-1361 to see about reserving the perfect football party place for your favorite team’s next game. (It may or may not be the Buffalo Bills. I’m just saying…)

The Niagara Holiday Market, which has drawn regional shoppers to Old Falls Street since Nov. 25, has ended it’s holiday run as of January 1, and Barker Chocolate Box was a huge part of the successful experience in Niagara Falls. The booth was a main attraction and business was brisk according to Cindy Jex, owner of Barker Chocolate Box. “Our stand was always busy and it was a great event for Barker Chocolate Box. People loved our products and came back for more!”
According to an article in the Buffalo News, the festival’s small businesses including Barker Chocolate Box, brought thousands of customers to downtown Niagara Falls where they set up stands filled with their products for sale in an area that is usually vacant space. Not only Barker Chocolate Box, but other vendors reported selling out of merchandise during the market’s first few weeks. Luckily for chocolate lovers, you can purchase candy and treats from Barker Chocolate Box online in their shop that is open whenever you are ready for deliciousness – just click the link below to visit.

People love to keep up with trends and using real wood, metal, and stone for their counter tops is vogue. But is it the best choice? Let’s look at wood, for example.
Richard Maedl of Maedl’s Woodcrafts, 33 Mechanic Street in Middleport would like you to consider high definition laminates for a couple of reasons. First, let’s explain what they are.
Laminates are typically made from a thin layer printed paper bound with melamine resin attached to high-density fiberboard. <– See photo left.
Let’s compare using wood counter tops to laminates. The wooden counter tops are commonly called butcher block and can be made from many different species but hard maple is the most popular. It’s tough and affordable – it goes for about $30 per square foot, and can be refinished easily. BUT, it needs to be oiled every month or so. If not, the wood can darken and split. Wood is not heat resistant and can be burned and it often gets scratched. Owners often get disappointed.
Sure the real wood looks great, but many people think that high definition laminates are the real thing because they come in so many colors and finish options, they are affordable and durable. Most laminates are about 1/4 the cost of stone, engineered stone or copper and some woods, which is a big factor for a lot of folks, and they last.
Many of our customers think they want natural wood only to be disappointed when it cracks, gets scratched, stained or is damaged from a hot item placed there. It’s to be expected with natural materials.
But if you want to stay within budget and have beautiful kitchen counter tops for years to come, Rick recommends a high definition laminated counter top, which usually run from $15 to $40 per square foot installed.
Call Maedl’s Woodcrafts at (716) 735-7631 to ask about the benefits and wide range of color and texture options for high definition laminate counter tops for your kitchen.

I have been using The Banquet Place in Middleport for parties for quite some time now. Here is a shot I took of my favorite place at The Banquet Place.
Why is it my favorite place?
Because people can’t help but gather around the handsome full-service bar at The Banquet Place. It’s a comfortable place to chat and enjoy a drink during a party.
They can watch the wide screen TV there or catch their program on the other four televisions located in each corner of The Banquet Place.
And because they have cable TV, this makes The Banquet Place the perfect spot for your group to watch a sporting event and celebrate.
Of course, there are lots of people who have their wedding receptions there too – it seats 500+ people, like I did.
Maybe if the Bills do really well this season and there are some playoff games to have a big party for I can use it for that. Here’s hoping!

You can have your pick if you are in the need for gluten-free baked goods, and for those without gluten issues, Ellen was recently spotted having one of the Sweet Sixteen Cafe’s chocolate chip cookies…just out of the oven, a little crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside and the chocolate was gooey. Physiologic Effects of Radiant Heat
- Analgesic—This effect is the most frequent indication for the application of heat. Current thought suggests this
effect is related to the gate control theory of pain modulation.
- Antispasmodic—Heat is generally considered to produce a relaxation effect and reduction in muscle guarding. It also increases the elasticity of connective tissue which is an important consideration in treatment of post acute strains and sprains, and after long periods of immobilization.
- Decongestive—Increased capillary blood flow is important in the treatment of many types of injury because it causes an increase in the supply of oxygen and other necessary nutrients and enzymes in addition to an increased clearing of metabolites.
- Sedative—Heat helps decrease spasticity, tenderness and spasm.
- Local vasodilation—Increases local metabolic rate (increased healing rate) and resultant additional heat.
