Does Halle Berry Have Others Seeing Green?

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NYInquiring minds want to know. The answer is on Mill’s Jewelers notebook and it starts with this…

Bucking the trend of recently engaged A-Listers, who chose princess or cushion-cut white diamonds in white metal settings, Halle Berry recently revealed her new 4-carat emerald engagement ring in a yellow gold setting. Fiancé Olivier Martinez told People and Us Weekly that the ring is “perfect” in a back story sprinkled with mystical elements of “The Da Vinci Code.”

You Know I Never Lose, Right?

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NYI knew he was the one two weeks after our first date in September 2007. He told me he was going to marry me and that we’d be engaged by the end of next summer. Now, several months later, Jason had been telling me that we couldn’t get engaged any time soon because of the cost of renovating our house.

It seemed that each time we spoke, he added a month or two to the length of time before we could get engaged. Disheartened, I decided I couldn’t do anything about it and focused on our first vacation together: a trip to New York City to see the Yankees/Red Sox series during the Fourth of July weekend.

On our first day in NYC, Jason took me to Tiffany & Co. We walked around and looked at the gorgeous jewelry. Then he took me to the engagement ring floor. He told me he wanted some ideas for when the time came…a long time from then, he reminded me. We looked around for a bit, but I was becoming frustrated. I kept thinking, why are we here? He already knew that I liked the look of the princess cut, and I had also told him not to spend a lot of money on the little decorative diamonds. “Spend money on the big one”, I’d said. After a little while, we left the store.

The next day was the Fourth of July, and it was raining. We went to the Yankees game, hoping it wouldn’t get rained out. During the 7th inning stretch, happy birthday messages and marriage proposals began to be announced on the scoreboard. Jason elbowed me, “Pay attention!” My heart was pounding. Inside I was screaming, “This is it!” I stared eagerly at the scoreboard. Three rows behind us, a couple got engaged. I kept waiting and staring at the screen. The announcements ended. Nothing. I looked at Jason. He had a silly smirk on his face. “Just kidding”, he said. With tears trickling down my face (and a few eloquent words I’d rather not share) I told him NOT to talk about getting engaged again UNLESS he had a ring in his hand! We even made a bet because I said he wouldn’t be able to do it.

Soon after, a rain delay was announced. Over an hour later and still waiting for the rain to stop, Jason suggested we leave to make sure we made it in time to see the fireworks. Surprised that he would want to leave a Yankees/Red Sox game early, we left and headed to FDR Drive. As we walked, I noticed that Jason was acting weird. He was barely speaking to me and wouldn’t take his hands out of his pocket. He wouldn’t even hold my hand when I asked him to.

When we arrived at the fireworks, we found a place to stand where we could see all three sets of fireworks going off simultaneously. The fireworks began and they were amazing! Jason stood behind me with his arms wrapped around me. About half way through the show, he started talking to me. “You know I love you, right?” “Yes”, I replied. “You know you make me who I am, right?” “Yes.” “You know I want to spend the rest of my life with you, right?” Again, I said, “Yes.” After a slight pause, he said, “You know I never lose, right?”

What? I turned around. OH MY GOD! Jason was down on one knee, in the rain, and he was holding the most beautiful ring I had ever seen. “Will you marry me?” he asked. “YES!” I shouted, quickly followed by “PUT IT ON!! PUT IT ON!” Little did I know, he had had the single stone princess cut diamond ring in his pocket the entire time we were in NYC.

Needless to say, he won the bet and I forgave him for making me cry at Yankee Stadium.

Wine With Ice

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

Wine About WinterThe date of our anniversary is very close to the birthday of our niece, Heather. My wife Debbie and I were approaching our 25th year together. My sister-in-law, Sharon decided to have a family picnic in her backyard to celebrate her daughter Heather’s birthday. I thought it would be a convenient occasion to surprise my wife with a diamond tennis bracelet. Also, I knew she would love the gift, and I would make a lot of points by being so romantic in front of her family. Especially, the Ugly Step-Sisters (an affectionate term I use for Debbie’s sisters, Sharon and Linda).

The plan was to drop the tennis bracelet in a glass of white wine and serve it to my wife with the family in attendance. When the stage appeared to be set, I asked Debbie if she would like a glass of wine. She declined, saying she already had a beer. My fault for marrying a German girl from Sanborn.

With the diamond bracelet in my pocket I paced and persisted with my offer to get her a glass of wine. I tried not to be too pushy since I feared I would blow the whole surprise.

Finally, my wife agreed to have a wine. I knew already that she prefers to have ice with her wine. So, I left out the ice cubes and dropped the bracelet in the glass. The moment was at hand. She took the glass of wine and reminded me that she would rather have ice in her wine. I was hoping when I pointed out the bracelet that she was familiar with the slang term for diamonds, “ice”.

With everyone watching, I said, “There is ice in the wine, Deb. Look closer, and Happy Anniversary”.

Well, it worked. My wife cried. The Ugly Step-Sisters cried. Even my Father-in-law had a tear in his eye. I just beamed, knowing I just made a lot of points and made my wife happy.

Another Gem From Mills Jewelers Notebook

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NYIn honor of January’s official birthstone – garnet – Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, invites you to step into our way-back machine and take a magical ride to a balmy Midtown Manhattan in August of 1885, where immigrant laborers are busy digging the New York City subway and sewer systems.

Deep under West 35th Street, near Broadway, one of the laborers unearths a reddish-brown alamandite garnet weighing an incredible 9 pounds, 10 ounces. As heavy as an infant and about seven inches in diameter, this 24-facet behemoth was originally named the Subway Garnet and you can read the best of the story here

A San Francisco Proposal

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NY

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

Over 36 years ago, I entered into a long distance relationship with a young man in his teens. having met through a mutual friend, I fell in love with a young man from the West Coast.

We continued our long distance relationship for a few years. In December 1973 I decided to fly to the West Coast for the holidays to spend them with my boyfriend. There we were in romantic San Francisco when he popped the question on New Years Eve. I was hoping for this outcome since it had become a hugh effort to continue a relationship across the country and no sooner did he ask the question I replyed with an exuberant YES.

We were married about 11 months later and remained happily together raising our family with two boys in Buffalo. All odds were against us back then; a teenage marriage and no money, but we were determnined to succeed and with the help of our families and friends we made it happen.

We are still together 36 yrs later!

Wedding Jitters

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NY

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

It was the month before our big day. This day was to be in August. 30 days exactly, as we had been counting down from the moment we had set our date, day 365, 364, 363 and so on. We were always leaving each other little cards and notes stating the number of days that were left till we would be husband and wife.

Thirty days left and my fiancé arrives with a smile on his face. He surprises me with an early wedding present. As I held the neatly wrapped box, I could only imagine what would be inside. He had already given me a gorgeous diamond ring when we became engaged. What was he thinking?

As I opened the box in anticipation the excitement overcame me. Inside was a beautiful pearl jewelry set. Pearl earrings and a pearl necklace were in the box. As he placed the necklace around my neck, it layed just right. The earrings were also just the right fit. They were the perfect accessories for what was to be my perfect day. My fiancé had helped to complete my wedding outfit. He started it with the gorgeous diamond engagement ring and completed it with the purchase of my jewelry to go with my wedding dress.

Magical Memories Near the Water – From Mills Jewelers

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NY

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

Our lives together have created many, many memories near the water.

It was a warm June evening, when an former co-worker invited me to dinner with some friends of his. As we attempted to dock his boat in the canal to grab dinner, my inability to toss a rope to tie up the boat still gets a smile when I boast my incredible rodeo roping skills. Who would have guessed that date would be the beginning of a really wonderful relationship?

Later that year, it was my birthday and my boyfriend had made reservations for a nice dinner on the waterfront. It was an unusually warm November evening. After a scrumptious dinner, we walked to the along the waterfront to the lighthouse.

It was the first birthday we celebrated together. We had been dating just six months so it was very unexpected when we reached the top of the lighthouse, had walked to the different sides to take in the view and he dropped to one knee and asked me to be his wife. He slipped a diamond ring onto my finger as I said yes. It was so dark I couldn’t see what it looked like. It was such a long walk back to car anticipating what I would see.

When we reached the car, I was finally able to see the most beautiful diamond ring I had ever seen – and it was mine. I have looked at this endless circle that represents our unending love every day since then with the same mesmerizing awe!

The Perfect Gift From Mills Jewelers

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NY

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

It was going to be our 10 year anniversary and I wanted to find the perfect gift. I had been tossing around the idea of getting my wife a new diamond ring or a piece of fine jewelry.

I browsed through catalogs and searched various websites on the internet, but nothing struck me as being that perfect gift. Then one day I decided to go to the jewelry store to see what they had. There were so many things to look at. I thought I was going to have a very tough decision ahead of me.

As I scanned the jewelry cases there in front of me was a piece of jewelry that caught my eye. This WAS the perfect gift. It was a beautiful necklace that had diamonds representing the past, present, and future. I knew that I had to get this piece of gold jewelry for my wife. I bought the necklace and they neatly wrapped it up in a box for me.

Perfect!

The morning of our anniversary I woke up early, as I was filled with excitement. I couldn’t wait for her to open the little box and to see her expression when she saw what was inside. I knew that she was going to like it.

I presented her with the symbol of our life together, perfect. Slowly, she opened the box and began to smile. She absolutely loved it and wears it everyday to keep me close to her heart when we are not together.

How Cut Affects Brilliance From Mills Jewelers

Mills Jewelers has helped to commemorate expressions of love and milestone moments for generations of Western New Yorkers, who have promised to love and cherish with a diamond that will last throughout time as a silent reminder of everlasting love. And now, more about diamonds from Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport.

Did you know that a diamond’s cut is different than its shape? Cut refers to how a diamond is proportioned. Shape refers to the outline of the diameter. Some popular shapes are round, oval, square, pear, rectangular, trillion, and heart shaped. Each of these shapes can be cut in different styles of faceting. For instance, when a square shape is cut with triangular and kite shaped facets the cutting style is known as princess cut. When the same shape is cut with long rectangular facets, the style of cut is known as a step cut or an emerald cut. Round diamonds are usually cut in a style with 57 facets known as a brilliant cut.

Proportions determine brilliance. A properly cut diamond will reflect nearly 100% of the light entering the surface. If cut out of proportion, some of this light is lost through the bottom or side of the stone. If a diamond is cut too deep, light goes through the top and out of the side, making the stone look dark. If it is cut too shallow, light goes straight through the top and out of the bottom making it look lifeless.

Diamonds can dance with light. When light enters the flat surface of the table and exits through the angled facets of the crown, a flash of prismatic colors can occur. This is called “dispersion”. When light bounces off the perfectly polished surfaces of diamond facets, a rapid fire spark of white reflected light can occur. This is called “scintillation”. A diamond must be fashioned to catch every beam of light and choreograph its movement perfectly within the stone. If the dance is successful, the light is released back to surface where it is caught by the eyes of those who admire it. This total display of light is known as brilliance.

A round diamond is not always round. In fact, diameter is usually listed as two measurements, the most narrow to the widest. The flat surface facet called the table may look like it is in the center, but look again. It may not be. Facet corners should meet but they don’t always. The point of the diamond, or culet, should be in the center but sometimes it’s not. When facets are not shaped or positioned exactly how or where they are expected to be, light must find a different path. These variations in symmetry affect brilliance.

One thing affects the other. It’s the combined sum of all the angles, depth, symmetry and polish that will determine how much sparkle your diamond will exhibit. For instance, a larger table will make the diamond look brighter but reduce the dispersion of colors from the smaller crown facets. The effects of a deep pavilion may be camouflaged by a larger table. These are decisions that are carefully considered by the highly trained cutter. In order to achieve the best proportions, he may have to remove up to 50% of the rough diamond

Differences in Cut are easy to see but not so to define . A diamond that is well cut will seem to inhale light and breathe fire. A diamond that is deficient in cut will be obvious next to such a dazzler. Since there are so many variables in determining the ideal cut, grading in this category has been subject to years of debate. For a list of these different variables, go to Mills Jewelers online.

Mills Jewelers Diamonds are selected for superior cut. Every diamond is individually chosen by our own Graduate Gemologist (GIA) to meet the highest standards for brilliance. When you want a brilliant diamond for the one your love, come to Mills Jewelers.

New Year’s Fireworks From Mills Jewelers

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

And now, one of our featured romantic stories from our website!

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NYAs the last few minutes of 2009 crept by my boyfriend, Anthony, asked me to go out on the balcony of his father’s Las Vegas apartment to watch the fireworks. It was our first New Year’s together and I thought that his suggestion sounded very romantic.

He led me out onto the balcony, and as the clock struck twelve and the fireworks began to explode over the city he dropped down on one knee and took my hand in his as he pulled a tiny box out of his pocket.

I didn’t know how to react as he opened it to reveal a diamond ring that glittered in the reflection of the fireworks. I began to laugh and cry as he said, “Kathleen, my Love, will you marry me?”

I couldn’t stop saying yes through my tears and laughter, as he slipped the ring on my finger and my joy overflowed I couldn’t help but think this was going to be the best year ever.

The Happy Couple

As we went back in to share the good news with Anthony’s family, I took one last look at the ring on my finger and the fiery red of the fireworks reflected in it I felt that it was a perfect reflection of the burning love that we shared.

And when you are ready to get your own fireworks going, remember Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport for creative design, quality diamonds, superior workmanship and the trusted professionals your love deserves for your engagement and wedding rings.

Good Reasons To Consider Platinum From Mills Jewelers

Mills Jewelers, Lockport NYThere is a lot of misinformation out there about the advantages and disadvantages of the precious metals of platinum and gold. Here is a perfect example of the differences all in one ring. This is a picture of a platinum engagement ring that includes a section of white gold in the shank. The piece was added to increase the size. Obviously this was not the best idea but the lesson may prove valuable to you. The owner of this ring was an avid swimmer. In fact she used to swim at the Lockport YMCA at least once a week.

Take a look at the discolored yellow section of the shank. That section is actually 14k white gold, or should we say was white gold. White gold consists of 58.5 percent gold, the rest is alloy. The alloy is what makes the gold appear white and also gives the metal strength. Over the years, contact with chlorine dissolved the alloy portion of the metal. The white gold section now looks yellow because the natural color of gold is yellow and the part that makes it looks white has been partially dissolved away. The pit marks are the result of the missing alloy. Guess what happens when you gradually remove 41.5 percent of the ring. It crumbles.

Now take a look at the platinum section of the ring. Notice that it is still white and shows no evidence of pitting or cracking. That’s because very little alloy is mixed with platinum for jewelry, usually less than 10%. Also platinum is more dense than gold and therefore harder. Platinum is much more affordable today that it was just one year ago. In fact in recent weeks, gold and platinum have been within the same range per ounce.

It’s time to reconsider Platinum. It’s more secure for your diamonds. It requires less maintenance, and it’s more affordable than ever. If you have any questions, just call WNY’s premiere online jeweler, Mills Jewelry, at 433-6456.

John and I were in the same Newfane graduation class. It is tradition to sign other classmates yearbooks. John got my yearbook and signed “ to a great kid, good luck in the future.”

I received John’s yearbook and did not want to sign it, for I did not know him and did not have any interest in him. Just in time the school bell rang and I quickly returned his book without signing it. I thought to myself “thank goodness”, “saved by the bell”!

After graduation we were both separately invited to a graduation party. Everyone ended up in the pool. One by one people got out of the pool, finally leaving John and I swimming alone. We were diving into the deep section of the pool together. I still did not think anything more about John.

I was invited with friends to the Lockport Fourth of July fireworks. When I saw John was also there, I found out that it was a set-up. I still was not that impressed with him. Our classmates were surprised to see us together, because we did not follow the same crowds. I was voted by our class as “Most Reserved”. John was on the wild side with a fast car, a motorcycle and long hair. We were opposites.

On our first official date, John picked me up at my house. I introduced my Father to John. My Father asked where we were going. John replied that he had to go to Newfane Court to take care of a speeding ticket. At that moment John’s first impressions did not start out on a good note. John was not the kind of guy envisioned by my parent for their daughter.

After two years John and I went to Mills Jewelry. John purchased my engagement ring and our wedding bands. We got married on Flag Day, June 14th, our opposite personalities somehow blended together into a lasting relationship.

After 30 plus years of being happily married, I now own a Jaffri diamond ring purchased at Mill’s and have been blessed with two lovely children and two darling grandchildren. John and I have purchased two pearls for our grand daughter from Mill’s for her future romance. (“Add a Pearl”), I hope our family has many more memorable days together.

Haven’t Brushed My Teeth Yet

Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport, has collected hundreds of romantic engagement, anniversary, and proposal stories from couples all over the world and we have posted them on our website.

And now, one of our featured romantic stories from our website!

My fiancé Rob and I have been together since 2005 just after I graduated from high school. In 2008 we bought a house and moved in together with my now 7 year old daughter. I had been waiting for him to pop the question for some time and was beginning to start getting frustrated that there was no sign of this happening any time soon.

The beginning of November 2010 rob had said something about going shopping for me with his dad but I didn’t really believe him 100%. The morning of thanksgiving we all slept in. My daughter Marissa and I went down to watch the Macy’s Parade still in PJ’s no shower or anything yet. I went to walk in the kitchen and Rob came running down the stairs and would not let me pass. I was like come on move… Then I saw the box in his hand…. I looked at him and said what are you doing? Right now? I kept saying are you seriously doing this right now?

Then he opened the box and I gave him the biggest hug and said I haven’t even brushed my teeth yet. He said he didn’t care so then I started crying and smiling and squealing (you know how we girls get)

The ring – Princess center, round sides then two baguettes next to the round.

He asked me if I would marry him and of course I said yes….So then the whole day I got to tell my family as I seen them for thanksgiving dinner! Everyone kept telling me he must really love me if he didn’t mind that I had morning breath! It was the best thanksgiving ever I will never ever forget it.

HOW WE MET
I bought my first home – a first floor condo – in November 2002. I moved in Thanksgiving week and almost no one was in town. Sometime in December, my upstairs neighbor came down to introduce himself…

WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED
December 28, 2004

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sean emailed me in the morning and asked if I would go to see some geeky engineering movie in DC with him that night. I said “yes” and reminded him that this was true love…suffering through some dry movie.

We stopped for dinner at a little French restaurant around the corner – Bistro d’Or. After dinner, we walked around the corner to the E Street Cinema (a very cool, trendy theatre that specializes in independent films). I was being a smart aleck the whole time…”Hurry up Sean, the line of engineers will be around the corner!”

The ticket taker took our tickets (which I later found out Sean had forged) and directed us to Theatre 8. We walked in and there was NO ONE there. I made another smart comment about how popular this movie must be. We sat down and the movie started moments later.

After about 10 seconds, I realized that this was not some boring engineer movie – instead, it was “My Life as a House” – the movie we saw on our first date! Sean rented out the entire theatre… we were sitting there recreating our first date!

I started crying, knowing what this meant…and I continued to cry for the next two hours BECAUSE HE MADE ME WATCH THE WHOLE MOVIE BEFORE HE PROPOSED!!!

**a little background**

When the movie ended the first time, Sean and I had been friends for a couple months and engaged in some shy flirting, but skirting the issue of an actual relationship. (After all, we WERE neighbors) As we were watching this movie, I realized that the girl neighbor character is chasing the cute next door neighbor, which is what I’d been doing for months…I was mortified, thinking Sean had picked this movie on purpose. He hadn’t, but used this opportunity to turn to me and say “How do you feel about two neighbors dating each other?”

19 months later, when the movie ended the second time, Sean got down on one knee and, amid a whole lot of tears from both of us, said to me “How do you feel about two neighbors marrying each other?” Then he told me how much he loved me and that he couldn’t wait to spend the rest of his life with me. Eventually, I said YES!!!

The theatre had champagne for us…we toasted each other, asked the staff (and one random woman on the street) to take a few pictures of us while the tears were still fresh (yeah…we can’t wait to see THOSE snapshots.)
