Memorial Day is not about the living, it is about the men and women who have died so that we, the living, can have life and enjoy the freedoms we have. This is one of two patriotic services that our church puts on in honor of our veterans, and it is always a moving service for everyone who attends. The worship service is followed by a picnic style lunch where our veterans are the honored guest.
The service begins at 10:30 and this is our personal invitation to you to join with us for this very special worship service. If you would like to stay for lunch, please call, (716)433-8030.

And the 150 guests at this event that was held recently by the Masonic Lodge were so pleased that it was held at The Banquet Place at the Middleport Fire Hall. They enjoyed the comfortable and newly remodeled interior, ample restrooms, and so much more that made the event perfect.
The Banquet Place can seat more than 500 people, and is air conditioned too. And there is plenty of parking as well in lots that are just a hop, skip and jump away.
Lots of folks enjoyed the full bar too, and the full kitchen was where a delicious meal was prepared and served to everyone’s delight.

It’s that time again – time for the delicious taste of homegrown vegetables. The season begins with asparagus and it’s picked and ready for you to pick up at Schwab’s Farm Market, 9035 Rochester Road in Gasport.
While this is just the beginning of the fresh and homegrown produce that we enjoy in WNY, you had better not miss it. Asparagus comes on early in the spring but it won’t last forever.
According to some experts, it also has some amazing health benefits. Yes, they say that asparagus can detoxify our system, has anti-aging functions, is considered an aphrodisiac, can protect against cancer, reduces pain and inflammation, can prevent osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, and reduces the risk of heart disease. So what’s not to love? (I am not sure if the big blob of butter I usually put on my has any effect on these benefits, however.)
So head over to Schwab’s Farm Market and enjoy your WNY veggies while they are fresh. And don’t forget that Schwab’s accepts Food Stamps.

No, they are not, and here’s why. Not all vitamins are designed by health professionals. Not all vitamins are rapidly absorbed by the body using the most effective means of delivering the nutrients and minerals as possible. Why spend money on vitamins or supplements if they are not going to be absorbed and just pass through you?
The nutraMetrix line of advanced nutraceutical supplements, do deliver maximum results because they are absorbed by your body quickly and are simply the most effective means of delivering the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients the body because they are isotonic. Isotonic supplements are rapidly absorbed by the body for maximum results.
What are Isotonix? Isotonix® dietary supplements are a replica of the body’s own fluids such as tears, intravenous fluids, plasma and breast milk. All fluids in the human body have a certain concentration, which is called the osmotic pressure. The body’s common osmotic pressure — which is isotonic — allows a consistent maintenance of all body tissues. In order for a substance to be used in the body’s metabolism, it must be changed to the isotonic state.

Anyone interested in Niagara County history? Local author and Middleport resident, Fred Fierch captured the best from the 18-mile stretch between Lockport and Medina in an Images of America book.
It features never before seen vintage images from both private and public collections and showcases the importance of the Erie Canal. It also traces the development of transportation and the role of fruit farming in the area. It also includes an area of WNY that is significant in frontier development in the 1700′s due to the major east-west roads.
The book is available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online through Arcadia publishing.

And Lisa would like you to take a look too. Apple Blossom Florist’s new website really shows off the beautiful floral arrangements that are available at Apple Blossom Florist, 530 Main Street in Medina.
Because the folks at Apple Blossom Florist wanted to highlight seasonal flowers, a slideshow gallery with arrangements that are ready-to-order for the special holidays scrolls on the left side of the site. Customers can see what arrangements are available and call in to order – no need to stop into the shop.
The floral photo galleries feature Wedding, Sympathy and Everyday flowers that have been created, and they are breathtaking. If you click on an image, it is then available in two larger size options for easy viewing and you can cycle through the photo galleries from that pop up window. This way, one leaves the site to go to a blank page just see the larger images.
There are also some items to call in to order in both fresh flower and chocolate covered fruit and flower arrangements. And coming soon, is a shopping cart for online ordering.
Lisa would love to have you check it out and give her some feedback about her new website.
Richard Maedl of Maedl’s Woodcrafts, told us that high definition laminates are a great and a smart choice for your kitchen for many reasons.
Laminates are typically made from a thin layer printed paper bound with melamine resin attached to high-density fiberboard. <– See photo left.
They look great, come in many colors and finish options and they are affordable – much more affordable than the real thing in most cases.
Many folks think they want natural stone, metals, engineered stone or granite only to be disappointed when it cracks, gets scratched, smudged or stained or is damaged from a hot item placed there.
Let’s look at natural stone as a choice. This can include granite, marble, slate and soapstone that are sourced from quarries around the world. So, no two cuts are the same.
While natural stone is naturally heat and scratch resistant, extremely durable and comes in a wide variety of grains and hues, it’s expensive. The softer stone can crack, chip or scratch. It can also be porous and absorb stains easily. When that happens, which is often, it requires regular maintenance and sealing. And the countertop joints are visible. The price range for stones run from $60 to $150 per square foot installed. That’s expensive.
If you want to stay within your budget and still want to have a beautiful kitchen, Rick recommends a high definition laminated counter top. It will have the look you want and last.
Call Maedl’s Woodcrafts at (716) 735-7631 to ask about the benefits and wide range of color and texture options for high definition laminate counter tops for your kitchen. Visit the Maedl’s Woodcraft showroom online.

Laura has just taken over the consignment shop at 149 Telegraph Road in Middleport called Neat Repeats and she would love to show you what she has planned.
The shop hours, beginning on June 20, 2011, are Mondays through Saturdays from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
I visited this weekend and this is a photo of my purchase – a brand new ladies Notations top that had never been worn – with the tags on! Laura, the new owner, told me that a large number of ladies items sized Large and Extra Large have just come in and this adorable, comfortable and fashionable top was one of them. I snatched it up without even trying it on. And yes, when I got home, it did fit and looks great.
I also learned that the Dollar Room is quite a hit, especially now that summer has arrived and the kids need play clothes. The room is packed full of new or gently used items that are all ONLY $1.
There are a ton of jeans and great brand names tops for the teens too – a almost got a hoodie for my son but realized that he already has about three too many – but it was in great shape and was Abercrombie and Fitch. Very tempting.
Laura told me that she also takes donations of clothing if you are cleaning things out and would just like it gone. Items must be clean, gently used, pet hair and odor free. Give Laura a call to learn more at (716) 735-7417.
It’s never too early to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the Sweet Sixteen Cafe, 16 W. Main Street in Lockport, is no exception to the rule. Just take a wee look at some of the special coffee drinks featured on their specials board in anticipation of St. Patty’s Day.
Signature Drinks at the Sweet Sixteen Cafe are enough to make you want to turn to drink!
Not only are the drinks delicious, but you may be able to learn about some famous Irish literary folks because so many are named after them, and that’s no blarney. Joyce, Yeats, yes, they go down easy at the Sweet Sixteen Cafe.
Of course these beverages are absolutely perfect with a cupcake sitting next to them and if you haven’t tried a Nutella cupcake then you must – you won’t be sorry.

Yes, light bulbs are changing and it may not be easy to figure out what you need now with the new types and properties of the latest in light bulbs. But at Spalding Ace Hardware and Standish-Jones, we can help.
Did you know that the nation’s new light bulb rules start taking effect Sunday?
The standards require light bulbs be at least 25% more efficient and carry labels on the front and back of packages to explain their brightness, annual operating costs and expected life span. This applies to all light bulbs made or imported after Jan. 1, but the efficiency standards apply only to traditional 100-watt incandescents. The efficiency rules will begin applying to the old-fashioned 75-watt bulb in January 2013 and 40- and 60-watt bulbs in January 2014.
The incandescent that Thomas Alva Edison invented is notoriously inefficient. It wastes 90% of its energy as heat rather than light, which is why it’s so hot when in use. So when you need to get your bulbs, head over to Spalding Ace Hardware and get the right thing.
Stop in and find what you need quickly at our stores because we know that you would rather be doing something else instead of picking out light bulbs!
