Cupping is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that uses a glass cup and a vacuum situation.
By applying a glass cup to the skin and creating a vacuum, it causes the skin to seal against the cup. The vacuum created draws blood and lymph to the area, promoting circulation and healing.
You can learn more about TCM and cupping at Points Acupuncture, 2658 N. Main Street in Newfane. Acupuncturist Stacy Austin would be glad to answer your questions and see how you could benefit from some forms of TCM at Points Acupuncture.

At Points Acupuncture, 2658 No. Main Street in Newfane, NY, we offer a full range of TCM – Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Of course we practice acupuncture, a very safe, painless and effective holistic treatment, in which, very fine, sterile, disposable needles are inserted into specific areas of the body, called acupoints, along energetic pathways, called meridians, but that is not all we offer.
Perhaps you have never heard of some of these TCM techniques like Moxibustion, Cupping and more, so here is some basic information about a few of the TCM modalities we offer at Points Acupuncture, specifically Gua Sha, Oi Jong and Tai Ji.
Gua Sha
A healing technique that involves palpation and cutaneous stimulation by a round-edged instrument that results in the appearance of petechiae, or “sha” that usually fades within 2-3 days. Raising sha helps promote the movement of Qi and blood to promote normal circulation and can be used to alleviate pain and treat acute or chronic conditions.
Qi Gong and Tai Ji
Use slow, graceful movements and controlled breathing techniques to promote the circulation of Qi and blood within the body to enhance overall health. It can improve health by reducing stress, increasing flexibility and agility, improving muscle strength, increasing energy and feelings of well-being.
Call us at 628-3802 to learn more about these techniques, acupuncture or to schedule your appointment.

Cosmetic Acupuncture for facial rejuvenation works by balancing the functioning of the body and encouraging the flow of blood and energy to the face.
Facial acupuncture is able to increase the tone of the facial muscles, pulling the skin tight to flatten wrinkles and lighten deeper lines in the face, lift droopy eyelids, the increased blood circulation in the face, improving complexion, to clear or reduce age spots, rosacea, and acne. The local insertion of needles into the superficial layers of the skin has been shown to increase collagen production in the local area providing the skin greater elasticity and a more youthful appearance.
While the many individuals can notice immediate changes after the first treatment, Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments for facial renewal are commonly offered in treatment sets to increase the quality of the results.
A typical protocol provides treatment 1-2 times per week for approximately 5-10 weeks, for 10 total treatments. Each session typically lasts 45-75 minutes. While the results can last several years, monthly maintenance visits are recommended.

Points Acupuncture, now at two locations, makes acupuncture more afforable for everyone of any means.
Stacey Austin of Points Acupuncture, has just adopted the sliding scale method seen in ‘community style’ acupuncture settings.
There is a sliding scale fee of $35-55 per treatment with a one-time $20 paperwork charge for the first visit (so sliding scale fee of $55-75 for first treatment).
“With this method I hope that anyone intereted in trying acupuncture before who thought they couldnt afford it, can now do so. Each individual person decides what they can afford, no questions asked, no proof of income needed,” says Stacey.
The most important thing is that people are coming through the doors getting treatment to help them get better, the sliding scale allows them to pay whatever they can budget so they are able to get through the doors and get treatment. With a sliding scale, she cannot bill insurance BUT if their insurance company will cover acupuncture, Stacey will give them a superbill and reciept to submit to their insurance company and they can get reimbursed directly.
Stacey adds, “I am excited about this because I want more people to come and try acupuncture and see the benefits of it no matter what their means.”

Question: Does Acupuncture Hurt? What if I am afraid of needles?
Acupuncture is a safe and relatively painless treatment when performed by a qualified and conscientious practitioner. Licensed acupuncturists know the human anatomy well and are trained to insert needles safely.
Acupuncture needles are sterilized and disposable after a single use. An acupuncture needle is not the same as a medical hypodermic needle, they are many time thinner.
With needle insertion you may experience a brief discomfort as the needle penetrates the skin that can be followed by a mild sensation of tingling, warmth, or heaviness, that usually disappears.
Most people find the experience extremely relaxing and uplifting and even fall asleep for the duration of the treatment.
The benefits of acupuncture, an ancient and effective Chinese method for treating a wide variety of health conditions, is getting more recognition by members of the medical community all over the world, and many people are getting relief with acupuncture treatment.

With more findings like this, Western medicine is sitting up and paying more attention. In short, researchers conducting a study with people getting electronic pain stimulus on their ankles, found that when acupuncture needles were placed on the right side of the subjects’ bodies, the activation of the brain’s pain processing areas was substantially reduced.
When you read the article, you find the reasons or theories why this is so, but it is something that patients who swear by acupuncture for their chronic pain have been saying for years.
