Our lives together have created many, many memories near the water.
It was a warm June evening, when an former co-worker invited me to dinner with some friends of his. As we attempted to dock his boat in the canal to grab dinner, my inability to toss a rope to tie up the boat still gets a smile when I boast my incredible rodeo roping skills. Who would have guessed that date would be the beginning of a really wonderful relationship?
Later that year, it was my birthday and my boyfriend had made reservations for a nice dinner on the waterfront. It was an unusually warm November evening. After a scrumptious dinner, we walked to the along the waterfront to the lighthouse.
It was the first birthday we celebrated together. We had been dating just six months so it was very unexpected when we reached the top of the lighthouse, had walked to the different sides to take in the view and he dropped to one knee and asked me to be his wife. He slipped a diamond ring onto my finger as I said yes. It was so dark I couldn’t see what it looked like. It was such a long walk back to car anticipating what I would see.
When we reached the car, I was finally able to see the most beautiful diamond ring I had ever seen – and it was mine. I have looked at this endless circle that represents our unending love every day since then with the same mesmerizing awe!

It was going to be our 10 year anniversary and I wanted to find the perfect gift. I had been tossing around the idea of getting my wife a new diamond ring or a piece of fine jewelry.
I browsed through catalogs and searched various websites on the internet, but nothing struck me as being that perfect gift. Then one day I decided to go to the jewelry store to see what they had. There were so many things to look at. I thought I was going to have a very tough decision ahead of me.
As I scanned the jewelry cases there in front of me was a piece of jewelry that caught my eye. This WAS the perfect gift. It was a beautiful necklace that had diamonds representing the past, present, and future. I knew that I had to get this piece of gold jewelry for my wife. I bought the necklace and they neatly wrapped it up in a box for me.
Perfect!
The morning of our anniversary I woke up early, as I was filled with excitement. I couldn’t wait for her to open the little box and to see her expression when she saw what was inside. I knew that she was going to like it.
I presented her with the symbol of our life together, perfect. Slowly, she opened the box and began to smile. She absolutely loved it and wears it everyday to keep me close to her heart when we are not together.

Mills Jewelers has helped to commemorate expressions of love and milestone moments for generations of Western New Yorkers, who have promised to love and cherish with a diamond that will last throughout time as a silent reminder of everlasting love. And now, more about diamonds from Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport.
Did you know that a diamond’s cut is different than its shape? Cut refers to how a diamond is proportioned. Shape refers to the outline of the diameter. Some popular shapes are round, oval, square, pear, rectangular, trillion, and heart shaped. Each of these shapes can be cut in different styles of faceting. For instance, when a square shape is cut with triangular and kite shaped facets the cutting style is known as princess cut. When the same shape is cut with long rectangular facets, the style of cut is known as a step cut or an emerald cut. Round diamonds are usually cut in a style with 57 facets known as a brilliant cut.
Proportions determine brilliance. A properly cut diamond will reflect nearly 100% of the light entering the surface. If cut out of proportion, some of this light is lost through the bottom or side of the stone. If a diamond is cut too deep, light goes through the top and out of the side, making the stone look dark. If it is cut too shallow, light goes straight through the top and out of the bottom making it look lifeless.
Diamonds can dance with light. When light enters the flat surface of the table and exits through the angled facets of the crown, a flash of prismatic colors can occur. This is called “dispersion”. When light bounces off the perfectly polished surfaces of diamond facets, a rapid fire spark of white reflected light can occur. This is called “scintillation”. A diamond must be fashioned to catch every beam of light and choreograph its movement perfectly within the stone. If the dance is successful, the light is released back to surface where it is caught by the eyes of those who admire it. This total display of light is known as brilliance.
A round diamond is not always round. In fact, diameter is usually listed as two measurements, the most narrow to the widest. The flat surface facet called the table may look like it is in the center, but look again. It may not be. Facet corners should meet but they don’t always. The point of the diamond, or culet, should be in the center but sometimes it’s not. When facets are not shaped or positioned exactly how or where they are expected to be, light must find a different path. These variations in symmetry affect brilliance.
One thing affects the other. It’s the combined sum of all the angles, depth, symmetry and polish that will determine how much sparkle your diamond will exhibit. For instance, a larger table will make the diamond look brighter but reduce the dispersion of colors from the smaller crown facets. The effects of a deep pavilion may be camouflaged by a larger table. These are decisions that are carefully considered by the highly trained cutter. In order to achieve the best proportions, he may have to remove up to 50% of the rough diamond
Differences in Cut are easy to see but not so to define . A diamond that is well cut will seem to inhale light and breathe fire. A diamond that is deficient in cut will be obvious next to such a dazzler. Since there are so many variables in determining the ideal cut, grading in this category has been subject to years of debate. For a list of these different variables, go to Mills Jewelers online.
Mills Jewelers Diamonds are selected for superior cut. Every diamond is individually chosen by our own Graduate Gemologist (GIA) to meet the highest standards for brilliance. When you want a brilliant diamond for the one your love, come to Mills Jewelers.

And now, one of our featured romantic stories from our website!
As the last few minutes of 2009 crept by my boyfriend, Anthony, asked me to go out on the balcony of his father’s Las Vegas apartment to watch the fireworks. It was our first New Year’s together and I thought that his suggestion sounded very romantic.
He led me out onto the balcony, and as the clock struck twelve and the fireworks began to explode over the city he dropped down on one knee and took my hand in his as he pulled a tiny box out of his pocket.
I didn’t know how to react as he opened it to reveal a diamond ring that glittered in the reflection of the fireworks. I began to laugh and cry as he said, “Kathleen, my Love, will you marry me?”
I couldn’t stop saying yes through my tears and laughter, as he slipped the ring on my finger and my joy overflowed I couldn’t help but think this was going to be the best year ever.
The Happy Couple
As we went back in to share the good news with Anthony’s family, I took one last look at the ring on my finger and the fiery red of the fireworks reflected in it I felt that it was a perfect reflection of the burning love that we shared.
And when you are ready to get your own fireworks going, remember Mills Jewelers, 51 Main Street in Lockport for creative design, quality diamonds, superior workmanship and the trusted professionals your love deserves for your engagement and wedding rings.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about the advantages and disadvantages of the precious metals of platinum and gold. Here is a perfect example of the differences all in one ring. This is a picture of a platinum engagement ring that includes a section of white gold in the shank. The piece was added to increase the size. Obviously this was not the best idea but the lesson may prove valuable to you. The owner of this ring was an avid swimmer. In fact she used to swim at the Lockport YMCA at least once a week.
Take a look at the discolored yellow section of the shank. That section is actually 14k white gold, or should we say was white gold. White gold consists of 58.5 percent gold, the rest is alloy. The alloy is what makes the gold appear white and also gives the metal strength. Over the years, contact with chlorine dissolved the alloy portion of the metal. The white gold section now looks yellow because the natural color of gold is yellow and the part that makes it looks white has been partially dissolved away. The pit marks are the result of the missing alloy. Guess what happens when you gradually remove 41.5 percent of the ring. It crumbles.
Now take a look at the platinum section of the ring. Notice that it is still white and shows no evidence of pitting or cracking. That’s because very little alloy is mixed with platinum for jewelry, usually less than 10%. Also platinum is more dense than gold and therefore harder. Platinum is much more affordable today that it was just one year ago. In fact in recent weeks, gold and platinum have been within the same range per ounce.
It’s time to reconsider Platinum. It’s more secure for your diamonds. It requires less maintenance, and it’s more affordable than ever. If you have any questions, just call WNY’s premiere online jeweler, Mills Jewelry, at 433-6456.

HOW WE MET
I bought my first home – a first floor condo – in November 2002. I moved in Thanksgiving week and almost no one was in town. Sometime in December, my upstairs neighbor came down to introduce himself…
WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED
December 28, 2004
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sean emailed me in the morning and asked if I would go to see some geeky engineering movie in DC with him that night. I said “yes” and reminded him that this was true love…suffering through some dry movie.
We stopped for dinner at a little French restaurant around the corner – Bistro d’Or. After dinner, we walked around the corner to the E Street Cinema (a very cool, trendy theatre that specializes in independent films). I was being a smart aleck the whole time…”Hurry up Sean, the line of engineers will be around the corner!”
The ticket taker took our tickets (which I later found out Sean had forged) and directed us to Theatre 8. We walked in and there was NO ONE there. I made another smart comment about how popular this movie must be. We sat down and the movie started moments later.
After about 10 seconds, I realized that this was not some boring engineer movie – instead, it was “My Life as a House” – the movie we saw on our first date! Sean rented out the entire theatre… we were sitting there recreating our first date!
I started crying, knowing what this meant…and I continued to cry for the next two hours BECAUSE HE MADE ME WATCH THE WHOLE MOVIE BEFORE HE PROPOSED!!!
**a little background**
When the movie ended the first time, Sean and I had been friends for a couple months and engaged in some shy flirting, but skirting the issue of an actual relationship. (After all, we WERE neighbors) As we were watching this movie, I realized that the girl neighbor character is chasing the cute next door neighbor, which is what I’d been doing for months…I was mortified, thinking Sean had picked this movie on purpose. He hadn’t, but used this opportunity to turn to me and say “How do you feel about two neighbors dating each other?”
19 months later, when the movie ended the second time, Sean got down on one knee and, amid a whole lot of tears from both of us, said to me “How do you feel about two neighbors marrying each other?” Then he told me how much he loved me and that he couldn’t wait to spend the rest of his life with me. Eventually, I said YES!!!
The theatre had champagne for us…we toasted each other, asked the staff (and one random woman on the street) to take a few pictures of us while the tears were still fresh (yeah…we can’t wait to see THOSE snapshots.)
